Ampat Test Stand

Job Facts
Client: Ampat Southern Company
Location: Baltimore, MD
Completed: 1985
The Ampat Test Stand is an architectural testing facility. Large glass and steel models are built to monitor structural tolerances to wind and water. B&B Welding fabricated the 10 ft. x 40ft. x 40ft. high three-sided steel frame structure which, during testing, is sealed up to simulate a building with a glass curtain wall skin on it. To test the architectural models, the test stand is blown by an actual aircraft prop engine and sprayed with jets of water to try and make it leak. Given a full blast of the engine, onlookers can actually view the glass curtain wall bow under pressure during the water immersion test.
